EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS & VISITORS

Eucharistic Ministers

A Eucharistic Minister, also known as a Lay Eucharistic Minister (LEM), is a layperson who assists with the distribution of Holy Communion during worship services and/or leads the service reading scripture and prayers as a lector/reader.

LEMs play a crucial role in the administration of the sacrament, particularly in larger congregations or during services with a high volume of communicants.

Responsibilities of LEMs include the assisting the clergy in distributing the consecrated bread and wine to members of the congregation during the Holy Eucharist (Communion) portion of the worship service. They may stand at the altar alongside the clergy, at designated stations throughout the church, or move among the congregation as needed. In addition, EMs may help prepare the altar for communion. They handle the consecrated elements with reverence and respect, recognizing them as the body and blood of Christ in the sacramental tradition of the church.

Eucharistic Ministers undergo training must be authorized by the receive training from the clergy before serving in this ministry. Training may cover theological understanding, liturgical practice, and practical considerations for administering communion.

Overall, Eucharistic Ministers play an important role in facilitating the sacramental life of the church, ensuring the congregation receives communion in an orderly and reverent manner. Their service helps to deepen the worship experience and foster a sense of community and participation among our faithful members.

Eucharistic Visitors

Eucharistic Visitors (EV) are laypersons who are specifically trained and authorized to take consecrated elements (bread and wine) from the celebration of the Holy Eucharist (Communion) to members of the congregation who are unable to attend church due to illness, infirmity, or other reasons.

This ministry is significant in providing spiritual support and connection to those who are homebound, hospitalized, or in care facilities.

Responsibilities of EVs include providing prayer, pastoral care and communion during a private visit, as well as support to those they visit. By serving in this capacity, EV's help maintain a sense of connection and belonging to those who may feel isolated or unable to participate in regular church services.

To serve as a Eucharistic Visitor for St. Mary's, one must have authorization from our rector and undergo training to receive licensure from the Diocese of Florida. Diocesan training includes theological understanding, pastoral care skills, confidentiality, and practical considerations for visiting those in varying situations.

Eucharistic Visitors are trained to handle their ministry with the utmost confidentiality and respect for the privacy and dignity of those they visit. They honor the sacredness of the consecrated elements and the spiritual needs of each individual they serve.

The Eucharistic Visitor Ministry at St. Mary's is a vital expression of our commitment to caring for all members of the community, ensuring that everyone has access to the sacraments and the support of the faith community, regardless of their circumstances.
